5 Things to Know Before Booking an Underwater Photoshoot:

1. Time of Year and Location Matter

Choosing the right time and place is essential for creating breathtaking underwater portraits. I’ve carefully scouted several locations in Northland that offer safe underwater environments with minimal risk, ensuring stunning results with peace of mind. Northland's beaches provide natural backdrops with crystal-clear water and golden sunlight, perfect for ethereal images, particularly at certain times of the year. Alternatively, local pools, including private access to a pool in Ruakaka, offer a controlled setting ideal for those who prefer a more predictable environment. If you have access to a private pool, we can explore that option as well. Together, we’ll determine the best location to suit your vision and comfort level.

2. Safety First

Your safety is always my priority. As a trained professional in water safety, I take every precaution to ensure you feel comfortable and secure throughout the session. Whether we’re working in open water or a pool, you’ll receive guidance every step of the way for a safe and enjoyable experience. Before the session, you’ll need to sign a waiver confirming that you’re a confident swimmer, comfortable in depths of up to two meters. This helps ensure that we can focus on creating a relaxed and empowering experience while prioritizing your well-being.

3. Preparation Is Key

Before your session, take some time to think about the type of shoot you’d like, the location that suits your comfort level, and your abilities in the water. Are you envisioning a serene and graceful maternity session, elegant portraits or a playful and romantic couple shoot? Knowing what you’d like to achieve will help us plan every detail, from poses to props. If you're new to underwater photography, we’ll also discuss tips and techniques to help you feel confident during your session.

4. Wardrobe Makes a Difference

The right wardrobe plays a key role in elevating your underwater portraits. For pool sessions, flowing fabrics, pastel tones, and lightweight materials create stunning, elegant movement in the water. In open water, however, simplicity is key—lightweight clothing or bikinis work best to ensure both safety and comfort. If you're unsure what to wear, I’m here to guide you with suggestions tailored to your session. While flowing fabrics can create breathtaking effects, they are only recommended for pool settings, as they may pose safety concerns in open water. Together, we’ll choose the perfect outfit to complement the beauty of the water and your personal style.

5. Full or Partial Immersion Shoots

When booking your underwater photoshoot, you’ll have the option to choose between a full or partial immersion session.

• Partial Immersion: Your feet remain predominantly on the ground as we capture breathtaking half-and-half shots, blending water and sky, or stunning aerial perspectives from above the surface.

• Full Immersion: You’ll experience the magic of moving entirely underwater, dancing in the weightlessness of the ocean or pool. These sessions allow for truly artistic and ethereal portraits, perfect for those confident and comfortable in underwater environments.
